NAME:Jean-Jacques Leroy
CANON: Yuri!!! on Ice
CANON POINT: Post-Canon (December 2016)
AGE: 19
BACKGROUND:Pre-Canon | Series
PERSONALITY:
• Driven & Competitive: JJ is hardcore. When he first comes in, he talks about how he changed his routine in order to compete with Viktor, and how he was disappointed that Viktor wasn't competing that season. This says a lot about him as a person. He creates a specific routine targeting a specific person in order to beat them. This says that he can recognize when he needs to improve himself, knows when someone is better than him and puts 100% into whatever he is doing in order to beat them. This says that he's motivated by those who are better than him at things he wants to do, and pushes himself towards beating them. It's fair to say he is competitive in anything that he wants to do - from schooling, music, skating. He even argues that his fanbase is better than Yuri's. I know it seems like all he does is compete, but it is a huge part of his life and focus. His desire to succeed pushes him, and will always push him into the things he does.
• Afraid: Like most people in his position (and at his age of 19) would be, JJ is afraid of a few things - failure and disappointment. While through most of the series he seems up and high and proud, the moment he flubs - he falls apart. He is afraid of disappointing his fans and his parents. And, the worst part is, once JJ starts to fall apart, it continues going and going. He imagines the other competitors almost 'mocking' him. He apologizes to his mother for failing. He cries (the only time you see him cry in canon is a result of his initial failure and poor performance). Even though he does eventually fight through the tears, that fear of disappointing those around him is ever present. His fear of failure manifests at times as anger towards himself regarding it, too. Although we see him only manifest this fear and anger towards himself in competition, it's fair to say that any moment where he's expecting success - and ends up failing, is going to hit him hard.
• Awkward Joker: Do you want to talk about a guy who can't read a room? That's this guy. He's terrible at it. At times, his inability to read a situation can make him seem like he's naive to how his behavior bothers others. He makes inappropriate jokes at inappropriate times (such as calling Yuri a Lady, just because he's a small, pretty boy). He interrupts serious moments with inappropriate comments (such as when he walks in - and tells everyone he's going to win gold and get married first). When the annoyed group leaves him, he announces that he was joking. This tells us that he's not good at reading the current vibe or feeling of the room, and just says whatever he wants or what is on his mind even if it makes everything awkward. It also lets us know that he doesn't seem to get what is a bad joke to make or what makes people upset until the consequences after the fact. It means that he thinks it's good natured teasing or joking, even if others don't think it is.
• Hard-working: Winning with luck is not his method. He even says it himself. He fought a lot in the past to get his own style (and he has faced a lot of rejection, which he handled only by working harder and dealing with the rejection, which says a lot about him as a character). Essentially - other people rejecting him will not stop him from continuing to work at the things he does. He's also such a hard worker that he pours himself into everything he does. Performing? Write the song, perform the song, skate to the song. It's even what his own personal mantra (It's JJ Style) is a part of. This tells us that whatever he decides he wants to do - he'll pour himself fully into it, regardless of whether other people tell him it's stupid or bad, or that it'll never work. It also means that he's unafraid of work and effort. He doesn't expect anything to just be handed to him, and he doesn't wish failure upon others, either.
• Generally Good: I know I've made him sound like a bit of an awkward, almost bratty person, but he's really not. Sure, things he says are hurtful in the eyes of the recipient. But part of it seems to be his intention. He doesn't come across that he's genuinely trying to hurt people. In fact, he appears quite friendly towards his competitors (calling for Otabek when he first sees him, excitedly waving and inviting him to hang out). Because believes that his jokes and comments are in good fun until someone says otherwise, this tells us his intention is not to always be hurtful. Don't mistake this for him being a perfect angel, though. If he's being competitive, he can trash talk, but he would definitely tell others that he's 'nice' to his competitors. So at least he's trying, right?
• Performer & Flirt: His work as a public figure in Canada impacts how he interacts with others the most. JJ is here to put on a show. He wants people to see him a certain way. A tease, a flirt (he frequently winks to his fans, and competitors, asks them to cheer him on, and gives them nicknames such as "Yuri-chan"). This seems to be his most natural way of interacting with others and the way he would behave with strangers, too. Public image is everything to him. Because of this, until someone is close to him - they mostly just get the 'show' version of him, and not the boy afraid of failing. As far as he's concerned, maintaining a positive public image is the most important thing. He's...just super extra. About everything.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Boy has no powers. He's a skilled figure skater, a singer, has a fashion line. Nothing to nerf here.

• Pair of Skates
